THE DESIGN GOALS

Our client had an artful eye and predominantly renovated and decorated her homes on her own throughout her life. However, when it came time to update the master bedroom, she felt that it would be valuable to work with a designer in order to effectively bring her vision to life.

We began our project with our free design discovery call. We listened to our client’s wish list to improve the functionality and aesthetics of her space. She then completed our design questionnaire and sent us inspiration photos and photos of her home- to give us an idea of her style. After that, we scheduled an in-person design consultation. During the consultation, we toured her home and listened to her about what she loves and doesn’t love about her home. This is valuable because it gives us insight on what could be tweaked to improve the functionality and aesthetics right now, where the existing furniture may work in other rooms and to ensure that the master bedroom project would feel cohesive with the rest of the house. We provided our insight on what could be done to improve other areas in the home and gave our feedback on the master bedroom design. After we completed the design consultation, we provided her with an estimate of the work to be accomplished, we both signed the contract and we went to work on the the schematic design phase of the project, in preparation for our initial presentation.

The master bedroom was the only room in their house that they never substantially updated when renovating and decorating. It had received new carpeting a few years back, and had also been updated with new bedding and changing around accessories from time to time. However, to our clients it felt dark, dated and unwelcoming. They wanted to create a space that felt light, bright and luxurious (with a POP of color and layering of beautiful patterns).

In the design programming phase, we discovered that our client envisioned a statement wall that didn’t overpower the rest of the room. She was seeking furnishings with cleaner lines that were lighter in tone that the existing wood furnishings. They also both wanted better lighting- brighter with the option to dim. And, they wanted to address the flooring, as they were experiencing issues with buckling carpet (which can occur when carpet isn’t stretched properly).

THE DESIGN CHALLENGES- BEFORE PHOTOS

The overall placement of the furnishings worked really well for the space. I typically prefer the bed to be placed on the wall across from the point of entry in order to create emphasis in a room. Depending on a room’s layout, this typically make a room feel the most open as well.

However, the settee and armoire were too heavy visually for the room, and didn’t serve a purpose anymore.

The balloon shades that were from the previous owner made the windows feel small and squatty. The room was also sorely lacking in light, with just table lamps and the natural light providing light sources.

THE DESIGN

Since this floor plan wasn’t drastically changing, we decided to utilize just our design concept presentation boards to illustrate our designs. Design concept boards are 2D presentation boards we create using our vendors photos of the products to illustrate the overall design concept. This is one of our first presentation methods for a design, and may be one of the only visual tools we use if 3D models aren’t necessary, which is often the case in decorating projects or simple remodels.

Our overall design concept for this space was light and airy, with a refined and sophisticated look, bright pop of color in the textiles, all while not straying too much from the traditional vibe of the rest of the home.

From the moment I walked in the space, after our initial conversation with our stylish client, I knew that I wanted to remove the shades and blinds from the windows. Instead, I wanted to add high side stationary drapery panels and layer a linen roman shade underneath. The high drapery panels are a great use of line in most spaces- as they draw the eye up effectively making windows and the overall room feel larger. High drapery panels always make a bedroom room feel more luxurious, in my opinion! I initially wanted to utilize silk drapery panels in a champagne tone with a linen grey roman underneath. The layering of neutrals and non-patterned textures added a luxurious feel, without taking away from the patterned accent wall. However as we progressed in our schematic design phase, I realized our client was willing to modernize the room more. At this point, I revised the design to an abstract geometric sheer linen drapery panel with white linen roman shades. This further enhanced the light and airy aesthetic that they were earning for in their dream master bedroom.

Below you can see how the design progressed from the initial concept to the final concept. We changed out some of the elements, and decided to install new carpet in lieu of refinishing the floor and adding an area rug. In the end, our client was thrilled with the final result!

“Jessica is a talented designer with an innate sense of style. She is delightful and fun to work with, professional and flexible. Our master bedroom project transformed a very tired and dated space into an oasis of calm serenity and beauty. Jessica helped curate the separate pieces into a work of art, while being mindful of budget and time restrictions.”

THE DESIGN COMPLETION

We love a good before and after….. and this project definitely didn’t disappoint!

We often talk a lot about the benefits of a well planned interior to support the functionality of our daily lives and for our mental well being.
