THE DESIGN GOAL

Our clients were seeking to update their builder grade family room. They requested a comfortable family room with architectural interest and a stone faced fireplace with a rustic mantle. They wanted to be very comfortable when lounging and watching TV with family, but they were looking for a departure from the large sectional they owned for many years. Ultimately, they wanted a space that felt light and bright, but still conveyed the warmth of an intimate family space.

We collaborated with the clients through our full service interior design offering. We created a few concept boards and a 3D model to help them visualize the design before any construction began.

THE DESIGN CHALLENGES

The shape of the room created the largest design hurdle. The clients wanted their TV to be centered with the seating area, but this didn’t allow the TV to be centered on that particular wall. We were challenged with finding a way to offset this visually and create cohesion in the space.

“Jessica is a talented, creative, quality designer. She completely transformed our room into something we never could have dreamed of ourselves.…. She is a visionary and has a unique ability to see a space and pull things together that literally changes and renews all at the same time…. She wants the design to be what YOU want. I wouldn’t hesitate to refer her to others, and have already contracted with her for our next project!”

THE DESIGN COMPLETION

We installed board and batten style moulding throughout the entire room to create balance in the room. It also added architectural interest consistent with the style of the home and the updates they were seeking to make with the upcoming years. Another benefit of the moulding is that it keeps the space light and cohesive, but it also can help make expansive spaces have a more human scale.

We also solved the off center TV arrangement by installing custom Cherry floating shelves around the TV in an asymmetrical arrangement. This offset the installation visually, so it didn’t feel off centered.

2019 Interior Design Trends

As I’ve grown older, I’ve realized that I can have a more balanced approach to trends. I think it is important to carefully consider trends and see how they may affect your life. I always ask myself- does this ‘trend’ have staying power? Will this element or thing enhance my life? Do I truly love it or do I just love it for the moment?

When I can answer these questions, I know if it is worth picking up a low-price point trend item or if it is worth implementing the trend in a bigger way because I truly love it and feel that it will affect my life in a positive way.

In this post, I’m sharing trends that I feel have lasting power and will make a difference within interiors when utilized properly.
