THE DESIGN GOALS

Our clients were ready to update their upstairs bath after 16 years in their home. It had a pedestal sink which wasn’t ideal for storage and it felt dark and dated.

We began our project with our complimentary design discovery call. We listened to our client’s wish list to improve the functionality and aesthetics of their space. They then completed our design questionnaire and sent us inspiration photos and photos of their home- to give us an idea of their style. They loved mid-century design, favoring warm woods and graphic patterns. After that, we scheduled an in-person design consultation. During the consultation, we toured their home and listened to their thoughts and feelings about how their home has functioned for them over the years. This is valuable because it gives us insight on what can be changed and to ensure that the projected would feel cohesive with the rest of the house. We provided our insight on what could be done to improve other areas in the home and gave our feedback on the bathroom design. After we completed the design consultation, we provided them with an estimate of the work to be accomplished, we both signed the contract and we went to work on the the schematic design phase of the project, in preparation for our initial presentation.

The upstairs bathroom was original to the house, and had never been updated. They had resorted to storage furniture in the bathroom to hold their bathroom items and were just plain frustrated with the functionality.

In the design programming phase, we discovered that our client envisioned a patterned floor and were drawn to black and white bathrooms.

THE DESIGN CHALLENGES- BEFORE PHOTOS

The layout of the vanity, tub and toilet were the best options for the room, so we decided to retain the original floorplan.

We decided to add a floating vanity with storage, as a standard vanity would take up too much space in the room visually and in scale. We designed a custom vanity to make the most of the space and to provide them with as much storage as possible. We also added a recessed medicine cabinet for additional small storage needs.

THE DESIGN

Since this floor plan wasn’t drastically changing, we decided to utilize just our design concept presentation boards to illustrate our designs. Design concept boards are 2D presentation boards we create using our vendors photos of the products to illustrate the overall design concept. This is one of our first presentation methods for a design, and may be one of the only visual tools we use if 3D models aren’t necessary, which is often the case in decorating projects or simple remodels.

Our overall design concept for this space was elements of mid-century design with a classic black and white palette.

From the moment I walked in the space, after our initial conversation with our clients, I knew that I wanted to honor their desire for a graphic pattern, but with a more traditional feel. By choosing a Moroccan inspired design, the choice wouldn’t feel dated within a few years. I also wanted to carry a wall treatment onto the wall and proposed either a tile or vertical molding. The clients loved the idea of a tile design, so I proposed a handmade subway tile, that didn’t feel too perfect. It was a perfect complement to the concrete Moroccan floor tile. We carried the tile into the shower to create cohesion in the space. Due to the fact that the ceiling was slanted, and they wanted to keep the space light and bright we chose a white paint that we were able to carry onto the ceiling. This makes the angles less obvious or harsh.

Below you can see the design concept board with the material choices and hardware.

“Jessica is a talented designer with an innate sense of style. She is delightful and fun to work with, professional and flexible. Our master bedroom project transformed a very tired and dated space into an oasis of calm serenity and beauty. Jessica helped curate the separate pieces into a work of art, while being mindful of budget and time restrictions.”

Before + After: Watercolor Master Bedroom

The homeowners’ aesthetic has a more traditional bent, so we kept that in mind when planning the master bedroom. Coral accent pillows on the bed are cheerful contrast in the predominantly blue and white space. The watercolor collage, made by the homeowner’s mother, over the chair was the room’s color inspiration.
